Frequently Asked Question

How much does it cost?

The cost of surgical procedures for pets can vary widely depending on the complexity of the surgical procedure, size and weight of yourpet, level of expected post-surgical care and medications and the need forfurther diagnostic testing.

We will provide you with an estimate of surgical costs prior to any procedure. Keep in mind the cost for the whole surgical journey such as recheck costs in the recovery period and any further treatments.

We have access to GapOnly Pet Insurance claims to help owners receive on the spot insurance claims if they are insured with aparticipating pet insurance company. We also offer VetPay and AfterPay payment systems for owners who have accounts with these providers.

What does the surgical estimate cover?

Our estimates include pre-anaesthetic blood testing, intravenous fluid therapy during surgery, all anaesthetic and surgical costs, hospitalisation and all medications for before, during and to take home aftersurgery.

Ancillary tests and treatments such as radiography, ultrasound, histopathology or others will also be listed.

The estimate will likely have a range of costs whichreflects the unknown variation in actual surgery time and occasionally someoptional costs such as Elizabethan collars or prescription diets to aid in yourpet’s recovery at home.

How long does it take?

The duration of a surgical procedure varies depending on multiple factors including the type and complexity of the surgery, size of your animal and your pet’s individual recovery time from the anaesthesia.

We will schedule your pet to arrive at the clinic in the morning for admission. This allows our staff to examine all patients, perform pre-anaesthetic blood tests and give pre-medications prior to surgery. All patients will remainin hospital until they have adequately recovered from anaesthesia and areassessed as being ready to be discharged. If your pet is expected to remain in hospital overnight or longer, you will be advised upon booking or admission.

Will my pet be in pain?

It is natural to be concerned about your pet experiencing pain during and after surgery. Our vet will use a combination of pain relief techniques and anaesthesia during and after surgery to ensure your pet experiences as little pain as possible.

All patients will be provided with appropriate pain relief medication to take home for use after discharge. Clear instructions will beprovided on how to use the medications.

Can I choose which veterinarian performs the surgery on my pet?

We are aware that many clients and patients develop trusting relationships with specific veterinarians and prefer to have continuity of carewith the same staff member.

All our veterinarians are trained in surgery, however in some cases we may recommend having surgery performed by a veterinarian with more experience in the surgical procedure required. This is particularly relevant for orthopaedic procedures as some veterinarians do not perform this type of surgery.

Please feel comfortable to request whichever veterinarian you prefer and we will discuss whether we can accommodate your request at timeof booking.

Will my pet need to fast before surgery?

In most cases, yes. However, there are some exceptions.

·      Rabbits and guinea pigs should not be fasted before surgery.

·      Special instructions will be provided for your pet if it is particularly young or has ongoing medical concerns such as diabetes.

Please carefully follow all pre-surgery instructions provided by your veterinarian. If you are unsure about the pre-surgery requirements, please call our clinic. We are here to help.
