Frequently asked question on microchipping your pet

When should I get my pet microchipped?

According to NSW legislation, all pet dogs and cats being sold or given away must be microchipped prior to change of ownership.

Please be aware of the requirement that all pet dogs and cats in NSW must be microchipped by 12 weeks of age (as at April 2026).

If your pet is not microchipped, it is recommended you get it done as soon as possible. At our clinic, we can implant a microchip at the same time as vaccinations or as a stand-alone procedure.

Does implanting the microchip hurt?

Your pet may experience a brief period of discomfort as the microchip is implanted. Our team is experienced in implanting microchips and in making the experience as comfortable as possible for your pet.

What happens after my pet is microchipped?

Once all paperwork has been completed and signed by the owner and microchip implanter, it will be sent to the local council to be added to the microchip register. Once added to the register, you should receive a notification from council confirming the details of ownership.

It is vital to always keep your details up to date on the pet registry so your pet can be returned to you if it is found and scanned.

Do I still need to register my pet with council if it is microchipped?

Yes. Council registration is separate to microchipping. It is a requirement that all pet dogs and cats in NSW be registered with their local council. Please check your local council website for the requirements and costs of registration.
